Wedding Planning: A Basic Guide

Getting Started

Make the announcement: Some couples just don’t feel right if anyone knows their big news before their parents and other close family members do. If possible, tell both sets of folks in person. If your parents don’t live nearby, put in a special phone call.

Delve into dreams: Sit down with your fiancรฉ and talk ideas. Think about the style you’d like, whether it’s a beach bash, a sit-down dinner in a ballroom or a ceremony on a mountaintop. No talk of money. Yet.

Rough out the timing: While you don’t have to set a firm date now, it’s smart to have an idea of what month or season you want to marry in. Then you’ll know how long you have to get things organized. Because your wedding’s size determines where you’ll hold the party, how much it will cost (prices usually rise per guest) and whether travel will be involved, creating a guest list is one of the most important things to do. So make your list; your fiancรฉ and both families should do the same. You can, and likely will, cut later, but this first number will be your base.

Now talk money: It’s rare these days that the bride’s parents pick up the whole bill, so decide on your bottom line. Find out from both sets of parents if or how much they can contribute.
Get organized:Buy a notebook and separate it into sections for each budget category. This way you can write down the amount you want to spend on the item and then note your expenditures. As you near your limits, you can start to figure out ways to cut costs.

Most of the couples I talk to have never planned a wedding before. So these types of questions are some of the most common ones I get. And this is one of the more comprehensive write-ups I’ve seen that legitimately answers these questions without having to resort to click-baity tactics. So, respect in that department.

They Met on POF!

“SOO glad we went with Dow Oak Events. We knew absolutely nothing about hiring a DJ in Raleigh, but when we met with Erik, we just knew. So happy we went with that gut feeling! Everything went perfectly and we couldn’t have asked for more!” –Google

Couldn’t Be Happier

Yes. You read that correctly. They met on Plenty of Fish! Matt and Kathryn talked about how they didn’t have any expectations of working out long term… my, how they were wrong. The more they saw each other the harder it was to get away. And they couldn’t be happier with how this turned out! This couple and all of their friends and family were so much fun to party with! They were surrounded by so much love.

There were so many great dancers among all the friends and family. It was really fun watching everyone rock their different styles!

All I Do Is Win

YAY! Happy bride! This was when “All I Do Is Win” was playing. It happened to be the bride’s favorite song ever! And it wasn’t even on our list of requests. We love when things like this happen. It’s what we strive for with every wedding.

Thank you, Matt and Kathryn, for allowing us to be a part of your big day. It was a day to remember. With all of your friends and family in attendance, I’m sure you will have many more years of happiness and love. Here’s to it!

Final Thoughts

Every couple has a unique story. And as wedding DJs, we get to hear a lot of them. So we always like hearing unique stories. Which this one definitely was!

We’ve learned that being a wedding DJ isn’t just about playing music. So we take our role seriously. Facilitating such a big day is a serious job! That’s why we always give every wedding or event our all.

And as a final note, we just need to say… We absolutely love what we do. Being a part of the unique and personal ways couples celebrate is why we do it. And we loved being a part of this celebration. It’s always awesome to see how couples choose to celebrate.

At A Vineyard in the Mountains

DJing at a mountain wedding

Mountain Views for Miles

wedding photography couple flowersBeing based in central North Carolina, we don't see a lot of mountains in our day-to-day lives. While we do have some hills, it's always a treat to be able to head out west. The mountains of NC definitely have a lot of very cool venues, but one of the coolest ones we've seen is Point Lookout Vineyards in Hendersonville, NC.

A winery that boasts panoramic 30-mile views, it's definitely a sight to behold. From the back of the venue, the view truly does seem to go on and on and on. And when that's coupled with views of the rows of grapes, it just makes it that much cooler. We've been to a decent amount of vineyards across the state (they definitely do make for very cool venues). But there's something different about a vineyard in the mountains. And that something different was, without a doubt, a contributing factor in what made this wedding unique.

We really can't say enough about how the venue was able to transform for a uniquely "wedding" look. They have different types of events all throughout the year, all with different aesthetics. And often when we encounter venues like that, you can tell they're not specifically wedding venues. However, that was not the case here. The way the tables were made up and just the aesthetics of everything were that perfect wedding look. In our travels we've seen many many different venues. So you can trust us when we say this one was top tier.

DJ Ryan was so easy to work with! He was prompt, flexible, and supportive of our tastes and preferences. Dow Oak Events was within our budget, provided a lot of support and helpful items within their client portal, and very easy to work with as far as payment and planning. We were very pleased with our choice and would recommend them to others!

An Intimate Reception

wedding dinner photographyMany times we're just booked for the party. Being DJs, that's something we understand. The general perception seems to be that when it's time to party, it's time to call the DJ. But that's not the case with every wedding we do. With some weddings, we're able to be a part of the more intimate aspects of the day. Which is always something we remember. And yes, we do still get to bring the party.

It's an extra special day for us when we're able to be a part of the whole celebration from start to finish, or from prelude to last dance. This was one of those cases. We got there a little earlier than we typically do to make sure that everything was set and 100% ready to go. With smaller guest counts, it's necessary to make absolutely certain that everything is ready to go when the big moments happen.

We're happy to report that everything to do with Emily and Kristopher's ceremony and reception went flawlessly. Though with the way we set up our planning process, very little is left to chance. Which is just the way we like it.

The music selections were great, starting with acoustic guitar and cello covers for the ceremony and prelude. For the other big events throughout the night, guests were treated to The Darkness, Judah & the Lion, and Owl City. Which were some very refreshingly unique choices.

In the end, we were happy with our performance, and Emily and Kristopher were happy with their big day. And that's the most important thing to us.

We’re Definitely Coming Back to Bear Lake Reserve

Read the original post: We’re Definitely Coming Back to Bear Lake Reserve from Dow Oak Events Services or read it below.

engaged couple holding hands

A Venue With Variety

bear lake wedding venue decorWhen first arriving at Bear Lake Reserve in Tuckasegee, NC, there's a feeling of entering an entire new community. Clubhouses, amphitheaters, and even a lake... it's definitely an inclusive experience. Sometimes with wedding locations like that, there's a faint worry that when they do host a wedding, it somehow won't seem "weddingy" enough. As though since weddings aren't all they do, they won't be able to throw a good one.

With Bear Lake, that is not the case. When we arrived, we were immediately impressed. The first thing you notice is how the architecture fits perfectly with the "mountain lakeside" aesthetic that's prominent throughout the entire space. It really fits with the "lodge" theme. So if you're looking for a wedding venue with that mountain vibe, look no further.

While Bear Lake looked awesome during the day when we arrived, night was when it truly shined. As the sun set, the outdoor lights illuminated the stone and wood exterior. That combined with so many stars made for a night none of us there will forget.

We hired Dow Oak on short notice (whoops) but luckily they were available and let me just say.. our DJ Bradley was incredible. He listened to our song requests and made the entire day so enjoyable. I am so glad we went with Dow Oak. Talk about a party!

The Big Day

bridesmaids with flowers and dressesThough we always appreciate a scenic mountain venue, we're DJs. So for us, it really does all come down to the music. And as a running theme, the weddings we remember the most were the ones with the music we liked the best. It's as simple as that. And there was definitely some very cool music going on with Kelsey and Grant's ceremony and reception.

The ceremony and reception were both piano-based, which kicked everything off on a very classy note. With piano covers for the ceremony prelude and instrumental piano for the ceremony, it was definitely very cool.

Later in the day, we had some Queen for the introductions of the bridal party, and went from that into a first dance to a U2 song. And the last song of the night was a Queen reprise, which was an awesomely high-energy way to end the night.

Ultimately we had a great time DJing for Kelsey and Grant. The venue was super cool, they were very nice, and all the guests had a great time. And that's the kind of wedding we shoot for. No surprises and everyone having a fun and memorable day. And to end on, we just want to say that we're looking forward to the next time we get to take the trip out west to Bear Lake. We have a few more weddings currently booked there for the coming months, and we're excited to go back. Really, we have nothing but good things to say about Bear Lake Reserve. Anyone looking into having a mountain wedding should look into booking it in Tuckasegee, North Carolina.

An Appalachian Farm Wedding

couple holding hands wedding

A Truly Rustic Venue

appalachian wedding decorationsMany places use the term "rustic" to describe themselves. But we've actually seen very few locations that truly embody rusticness. The word itself means "of or relating to the countryside; rural." And we see many places that have a rustic feel, but none moreso that Appalachian Farm Weddings in Waynesville, North Carolina. It's hard to put into words exactly how it embodied the spirit of rusticness, but if you've been there you'd understand. And if you're looking for a rustic barn aesthetic for an upcoming wedding, this may be a venue to check out.

The combination of lakes, rolling hills, and distant mountains blend with the decor of the venue itself to really capture the sense of being in Appalachia. And being from the Piedmont of NC, that's always a refreshing aesthetic for us.

It seems like Caitlyn and Alex felt the same way about the venue and locale. You could tell they'd put a lot of work into developing the vibe for the day as a whole. And their choices coupled with the venue's made for a very unique evening for everyone, DJs and guests alike.

"We had the pleasure of working with DJ Freddie... He absolutely went above and beyond to make sure our day was everything we dreamed of! He was extremely nice and very professional! He made sure to arrive well before our event to make sure everything was perfectly placed! I would highly recommend DJ Freddie from Dow Oak Events to anybody! Thank you so very much to Freddie!"

Personalized Music Selections

love wedding decorationsWe wanted to touch on the music selections for the day as a whole. As DJs, the music is obviously something that's important to us. But there are events where we're required to be more in the background. Sometimes we have to be more of a soundtrack. And there's nothing wrong with that. We have just as good a time at those events. But something that stands out to us is when the couple takes a particular interest in the music choices. And on top of that, when their selections are really really good.

For the ceremony prelude, we had artists like Louis Armstrong, Etta James, and Elvis. So we were already starting off strong. And for the ceremony itself we had music from the Lion King, Forrest Gump, and Johnny Cash. It's hard to go wrong with selections like that.

For cocktail hour we even got to play some of our all-time favorites: the Backstreet Boys. We've never been to a bad wedding that had the Backstreet Boys.

When it came time to party, we had the playlists on lock. From crowdpleasers like the Wobble and the Macarena into Flo Rida and Will Smith... it was definitely a party.

These are the kinds of weddings we love to do. Where the couples have taken the traditional aspects of weddings and mixed them with a little of their own preferences and flavor. That's definitely a recipe for a memorable wedding day in Waynesville, NC.

Another Great Time in Lake Lure

A True Mountain Venue

couple posing for wedding photos in western ncWe talk a lot about how every wedding is different. When you've seen as many as we have, that's definitely something you come to understand. And it also becomes one of your favorite parts of hosting weddings. Variety is the spice of life, and no where is that more true than in wedding ceremonies and receptions. In that same vein, no two mountain weddings we've seen have been the same. And this one kept up that trend.

Though our home base is in Greensboro, NC, we really are all over the place. One weekend we'll be all the way down on the coast and the next weekend we'll find ourselves winding through the mountains of western North Carolina. Every region we travel to has it's own appeal, but there's always something a little extra cool about getting to travel to the mountains. It might be because we're piedmont-based, thus more used to hills, but who knows.

In terms of cool mountains venues, Rumbling Bald Resort in Lake Lure, NC is one of our favorites. Not only are we there a good amount, the area looks awesome. With Rumbling Bald nestled between the lake and the mountains, it makes for a combination of gorgeous views. It's always a treat to go to the mountains any time of year, but seeing it in the fall is a different story. Words don't do it justice.

Rumbling Bald Resort is definitely a venue we've come to enjoy. We have a few weddings currently booked there later this year, and we're excited to make our way back west.

Dow Oak Events did the music for my ceremony, cocktail hour and reception. Any concerns I had, DJ Mason was there to assist and alleviate any pressure... I received many compliments after the wedding saying our music was so amazing. All the music was perfect and I would definitely use Dow Oak Events again - and ask for Mason. Thank you again!!!

Unique and Intimate

table set up for nc weddingWhile super-hype, 250 people, raging receptions are undoubtedly an awesome time, there's also something to be said for the more intimate receptions. And since we've seen the full gamut of receptions, you can trust us when we say both are great in their own way. Sometimes a celebration calls for a total throw-down and an extensive guest-list. But other times it calls for a more intimate approach. And an intimate approach was the way Shannon and Derek went.

It was our pleasure to be part of this celebration. And we were a part of it from the very beginning, which was also very cool. We got there a little earlier than we usually do to make sure that everything was all set and ready to go for the ceremony prelude. And, admittedly, for a little extra time to take in some of the views. And that preparedness paid off when the ceremony went completely perfectly.

We're also pleased to report that the rest of the reception also went perfectly. We got to play a ton of great music (obviously something we love). From Ed Sheeran to Ludacris to Justin Timberlake, we had a lot of jams on deck.

All-in-all, Derek and Shannon's mountain wedding at Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure was one that we'll remember for a long time to come. When everything goes well and the venue is so great, it all comes together for an amazing night.

A Different Type of Cheesecake!

Face it: The wedding cake is rarely the best part the reception. Sure, it’s pretty to look at and the ceremonial cutting is fun and all, but if you’re really hoping for it to take center stage, you should probably go for something a bit non-traditional like, say, a tiered version that’s actually just a beautifully stacked series of cheese wheels. If that sort of dairy bonanza seems like a good fit for you and your crowd, may we direct you to this remarkable five-tier version currently available at Costco.

Costco, a land of mac and cheese buckets, legendarily cheap rotisserie chickens, and shockingly decent store-brand booze is hoping to cater to dairy-loving betrothed couples with an Cheese Lover Celebration “cake” consisting of five wheels of different cheeses from around the world. Altogether, the whole thing weighs in at a whopping 22 pounds, which should provide more than enough cheese for your guests (especially if you only invite 22 people).

As for the variety, the base/biggest wheel is a Red Leicester (similar to cheddar), topped by a Danish Blue, followed by a Murcia al Vino (goat), a Tuscan Sheep’s Cheese, and finally, a Brillat Savarin Triple Cream Brie. If you were hoping for a bargain option, this isn’t it though. The whole thing is priced at $439.99.

With a lot of couples trying to go in a different direction that the traditional wedding bells and whistles, the cheese-based wedding cake may be the way to go. Even with the weddings I’ve personally been to lately, there’s definitely a rising trend of going your own way with basically everything. If anyone’s interested, I would DJ a wedding with one of these cakes at a substantial discount and am currently entertaining offers. That is all.

Love At the Farmstead

“We had the BEST time. Everyone loved all the songs played! And meeting with our DJ beforehand to go over all the planning was great. It really made me feel better about everything. The Dow Oak Events planning process really is the best I’ve ever seen. It made everything so easy!! Without a doubt, would recommend” –The Knot

A Day to Remember

Here they are ladies and gentleman! Kaitlin and Ben in all of their glory. With the love of their closest friends surrounding them. Just look at them! They were so much fun. Make no mistake, we partied.
Quick shout out to the vendors. Especially Colleen Rett at Poppies Floral Design. Those bouquets were to die for! Everyone was definitely talking about them all night.

There were so many shots of the bride smiling and dancing, too. Which is something we love to see. It’s part of why we keep going! Making a couple’s big day as perfect as possible is what we love.

Gorgeous Photography

These photos are absolutely gorgeous. The raw emotion captured is stunning. Undeniably classy, beautiful, and meaningful. Jessie Paige Photography did a phenomenal job. The memories of the night are captured so well! Absolutely 10/10. In general, it’s hard to perfectly capture emotion in photos. However, these pictures stand out as amazing examples of emotion captured.

We had a blast doing this wedding. And we know all the guests had a great time too. It’s something you can just feel. Especially when everyone is letting loose and having an awesome time together. That’s another reason we love what we do all over North Carolina.

Fun Couples

These are the types of reviews we love to see! It’s always an honor to be invited to participate in someone’s big day. But when we can really make it killer is when we really love it. And that was definitely the case here!

Teresa and Chuck were AWESOME to work with! Their sense of humor was great and they were so easy-going. And the sunglasses were such a cool touch. Definitely made it a super cool wedding we were glad to be a part of.

Father of the Bride AND Officiant

These first dances were so loving and beautiful to watch. Teresa’s father played two roles, the Father of the Bride and the Officiant. A man of many hats and he pulled it off well.

Teresa and Chuck participating in a Dow Oak Events photo booth. Our Photo booth is always a hit at any wedding or party!! They pulled no punches and booked all of the props. And if that wasn’t enough, they also received a keepsake book of all the photo prints from the night. It is so much fun to be able to look back at all of the friends and family having a ball!

Chuck and Teresa tearing up the dance floor with all of their friends and family. It was great to see people of all ages on the dance floor. We always try to play music everyone can dance to, and tonight we succeeded.

It’s great to see family members involved in the wedding. it really shows that they care about the couple’s big day. Not only that, but that they want to be an active part of it. A Traveling Gown With History Goes On Display

Elizabeth Wray never had very much as a young woman, having grown up in the east end of London between the wars, starting work at 14 to support her younger siblings when their mother died of septicaemia after an abortion.

But when she married in 1938, and for the rest of her long life, she was very proud of her wedding dress.

Like many of her background, Betty, as she was known, made her own gown for her wedding to the postal worker James Wray, using a relatively inexpensive artificial silk. She was a talented dressmaker, and her cousin Dorothy, who worked for the London couturier Norman Hartnell, already a favourite of the royal family, added some fine beadwork detailing to the collar and sleeves.

Betty Wray in the 1940s. Photograph: Museum of London

It was, in other words, “a rather upmarket dress for their class of people”, recalls her daughter Pamela Ackers. So special, in fact, that throughout the second world war and immediately afterwards, Wray would loan it to four other brides. Until her death in 2000 at the age of 86, it remained one of her most cherished possessions.

This month, 80 years after it was made, the dress that was worn by five brides will be the centre of attention again, as part of a display at the Museum of London.

I’m a sucker for both pet-related weddings and weddings that involve history in some way. So I read this article and immediately knew it had to be published. I actually would be very interested to see that dress first-hand. If anyone knows how I could achieve this new goal, lemme know.

“It was definitely important to us that all our friends and family have a good time with good music. And Dow Oak absolutely delivered!! The music selection was perfect, and everyone was hitting me up after saying what a good time they had! Completely recommend 100%” –Google

So Much Dancing

THE DANCING! ALL of the dancing happened at this celebration for MacKenzie and Alexander Cooke. The friends and family were all working together to make sure our newly married couple had one of the best nights.
We love to see plans come together to make a truly memorable day. Just take a minute to look at these photos and see how much fun was had. There is so much love in these photos.

Moments and Memories

First dances are such a special thing to watch. These dances were so filled with love, relief, gratitude and comfort. And the dance floor stayed packed all night long! DJ Freddie put all the good work in to make sure the energy of this party stayed at an all-time high. Pictures of these moments and memories are why we keep doing what we do. We hope this is framed in MacKenzie and Alexander’s house. All of the emotion in this picture would make anyone’s heart smile.
These lovely people are not only strapping men and gorgeous young ladies… These lovely people know how to put on a party in North Carolina! Just look at this venue. The flowers from Young’s Florist, Inc. and the phenomenal photos captured by Doug Burke Photography. And the couple really was amazing and so full of life and laughter. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your big day! Here’s to many more to come!

Final Thoughts

We’ve learned that being a wedding DJ isn’t just about playing music. So we take our role seriously. Facilitating such a big day is a serious job! That’s why we always give every wedding or event our all.
And as a final note, we just need to say… We absolutely love what we do. Being a part of the unique and personal ways couples celebrate is why we do it. And we loved being a part of this celebration. It’s always awesome to see how couples choose to celebrate.
